Dear Yuletide Writer
Sep. 27th, 2016 11:37 amDear Yuletide Writer,
just so you know, I am very happy to be writing this letter, and the thought that I'll be matched to you is super exciting. Someone else loves my tiny, tiny fandoms!! If you like hugs, here, have a huge one.
I hope you're having lots of fun with this Yuletide, and I'm sure you'll do amazingly. *hands you a virtual cup of hot chocolate*
Right. Let's see what my requests are.
First of all, my only general DNW is porn. You may be as dark as you wish; gore, violence, etc. don't bother me. I'll also be happy to receive fic of any length - from extremely short to extremely long.
Secondly, I love gen h/c and uneasy but strong friendships. Give me characters who are strongly drawn to each other but don't quite know how to express their feelings/are defensive or angsty about them/try to conceal them as best they can. AND THEN THEY DON'T SUCCEED AND THEY'RE A TOTAL MESS. Ahem. And fluff!! Uneasy, angsty fluff. Or plain sweet fluff after an angsty resolution. I'm not picky.
My AO3 username is plumedy and my requested fandoms are as follows (in no particular order):
1. The Armand Gamache book series by Louise Penny. Characters: Armand Gamache and Jean Guy Beauvoir.
I discovered it this summer and found the imagery superb, the characterization brilliant, and the iddiness of the emotional dynamics mind-boggling. LIKE SERIOUSLY, LOOK AT THESE TWO. Penny puts them in all sorts of dramatic situations for the only purpose of making Jean Guy think about how much he loves Gamache!! There is legitimately a scene where they're having A Moment while trapped in a burning house! I think I cried tears of joy over that.
I love, love, love the detailed, intelligent descriptions of nature and art in these books. I know and admire Clara's, Peter's, and Jane's paintings and the general landscape of Three Pines like I have seen and studied them in real life.
And all the diversity! And all the happy marriages! So unusual and so heartwarming.
Mostly, I want more h/c between Gamache and Jean Guy. I know their relationship issues were largely resolved in the third book; you may set the story during the first three books or give them new issues to deal with if you wish to :D Maybe Gamache needing comfort from Jean Guy after the Arnot case? Or Jean Guy generally failing to deal with his own stiff upper lip and going to the only person who's well aware of what is behind this facade?
Or maybe write silly Christmas angst? One or both of them failing to find suitable gifts for the other/being insecure about their gift ideas? Hahaha, I'd read the hell out of these awkward interactions.
I'm fond of pretty much everyone in this series, so feel free to add characters (yes, even Yvette Nichol, the insufferable little trainwreck).
2. Murder Rooms. Characters: Joseph Bell and Arthur Conan Doyle.
*shyly* Well, I have a whole tumblr tag worth of headcanons. http://thedarkbeginnings.tumblr.com/tagged/headcanons
Feel free to take any of these as a basis for a fic.
Also, maybe a reunion post-The White Knight Stratagem? I'd love to see their new slightly awkward emotional dynamics in the aftermath of Doyle virtually becoming Bell's equal!! You know, I totally headcanon Bell's final words ("drive these memories from your mind") as an implicit offer for Doyle to forget him, and this provides potential for SO MUCH INSECURITY AND ANGST. asdbdfhj
In general, I’m extremely fond of the awesome historical atmosphere of this series, its mild wistful humour, the Bell&Doyle “not-quite-father-and-son” dynamics, the angst -everything, I’m fond of everything. And then there are these incredibly intriguing possibilities that open when one considers the connections between Rooms and the Sherlock Holmes canon - just how truthful Doyle’s stories are? The Blue Carbuncle? The Dying Detective? The Three Garridebs?
3. The Graveyard Book. Characters: Nobody "Bod" Owens, Silas.
Bod has had a long and interesting life. He dies and is buried in the very same graveyard where he grew up! I can't believe this fic doesn't exist. I think I’ve wanted to read this ever since I finished the book. Bod’s parting with his parents and with Silas was too much for me to handle.
Alternatively, Silas’ past and what made him change who he was. I mean, it’s pretty clear he’s a vampire, but what kind of vampire? Were there others like him? Why the sudden idea to stop drinking human blood (which was presumably what he used to do)?
I bro-ship Silas&Bod like WHOA. This quasi-familial dynamics with an awkward, naturally somewhat cold father figure is so my jam. I just want them to hug,,,,, so much,, They love each other a lot, okay. And they're not the best at relationships but they try so hard *cries*
Things I love about this canon: its slightly childish tone (as Bod is the focal character); its sense of right and wrong; its imaginative worldbuilding, obviously; and how kind and understanding Gaiman always is to his characters :')
